March 2020: HBO expresses interest in developing the video game into a television series that would cover the events of the original game and its sequel.

Sam Raimi was attached to direct one of the adaptations but the movie languished in development hell and was never made.

2016: Upon its release in 2013, The Last of Us was considered by many as a good choice for a film adaptation.

The Last of Us was released on HBO Max on 15th January 2023.

While the filmmakers take some creative licence with the story, they confirm that certain shots from the video game are directly adapted and recreated for television. Keivonn Woodard and Lamar Johnson portray brothers Henry and Sam both of whom are slightly changed from their versions in the video game. Nick Offerman plays Bill, the scrappy mechanic. The series' recurring castmates include Merle Dandridge as Marlene, Jeffrey Pierce as Perry, and Anna Torv as Tess. The actor tried to create some distance between the two Joels and allowed the showrunners to dictate the characterization. While The Last of Us is based on a video game, Pascal wanted his portrayal of Joel to differ from the original character. Pascal will reportedly be earning $600, 000 an episode on The Last of Us, easily making him one of the highest paid actors in American television.

Tommy is a former soldier who holds on to the hope that the world will get better.įollowing the massive success of The Mandalorian, Pascal was offered many opportunities when the Star Wars series' second season wrapped filming. Gabriel Luna plays Tommy, Joel’s younger brother. Joel hasn't had an easy life and finds himself tasked with smuggling the young and defiant Ella, played by Bella Ramsey, out of the quarantine zone and across the United States. Joel, the series' protagonist, is played by Pedro Pascal. The Last of Us is a post-apocalyptic television series by HBO.

Together, Joel and Ellie must fight to survive and discover if her immunity could be the source of a vaccine. A weathered survivor meets a young girl who may be immune to the brain infection that started it all. The Cordyceps mutant fungus is ravaging the country and turning the infected people into ghosts of their former selves. Chaos ensues when an infectious outbreak brings society to collapse causes.
